A Sad Day at the Sanctuary

Steve-o, one of our special needs kitties, died yesterday. Steve-o was a sweet boy who, like so many of our charges, came to us from a bad situation. And like so many of us in this world, Steve-o turned to food for comfort.

Steve-o, who was 6 years old, came to us about 6 months ago and he was already quite obese. We struggled to help him with his weight but were never very successful. He really needed a home where he could be carefully monitored, something we unfortunately were never able to find for him.

Well yesterday Steve-o started seizuring, we took him to the vet and discovered that he had hepatic lipidosis, a bad form of liver disease, as a result of his obesity. He was so bad off that there was nothing that could be done and so the vet put Steve-o to sleep.

We are all just heartbroken and wish we could have done more for him.

In memory of Steve-o I want to remind everyone that although overweight animals might look cute, being overweight is just as deadly for them as it is for us. Please don’t let your pets get fat, and if they already are, please see your vet and work to help your pet lose the extra weight in a safe manner.

Good bye Steve-o, we will miss you!

About colvillevalleyanimalsanctuary

The Colville Valley Animal Sanctuary is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of abandoned, neglected, and otherwise homeless companion animals. We provide both crisis and long-term sheltering, medical care, fostering, and adoption services - all with the goal of placing our animals permanently in safe and loving homes. We spay and neuter all of the animals in our care and actively promote, through financial donations and community support, the effort to reduce the number of unwanted animals in Stevens County. By example and through education, we promote and advance the values of responsible pet ownership and the humane treatment of animals.
